I. Internet Basics

A. What search engines should matter?
- Google
- Yahoo
- MSN

B. How search engines rank a page (let alone a website) in 3 minutes or less....
1. A case of mathematics and

, not people
2. Words, words, words!
a. Which ones?
b. How many on a page?
c. What about images?
3. Time of most recent page update
4. Ease of navigation - easy on search engine spiders as well as people
5. Think of lessons from a newspaper

C. Pay Per Clicks (PPCs) and Pay Per Impressions (PPIs)

D. What about submitting your site?
"You're site is not being found in some search engines...." Sound familiar?

II. Ideas for Your Website

A. How do you know how your site is ranking? When it's moving up or down in ranking?

B. What if you don't like your current ranking?

1. Become an expert or outsource to a search engine expert!
a. Review your pages - any broken links?
b. Consult how you want to be found ( we've come up with a list we call our "5W's")
c. Search for popularity
d. Write for your site - different than for a brochure, an print ad, or yellow pages

2. Decide on a schedule to maintain the site, when to next review it, check search engine ranking, and redesign it.

3. Two redesign examples
a. a Dallas plastic surgeon client of ours -- Before: 100+ pages | After: 55 pages (the unnecessary "printable pages" are gone!)
b. two ways to show your newsletters -- Before: hidden pages | After: topic known

C. Links can help - especially from those in your field

1. Ask for links (may have to reciprocate)
2. Blogs
3. Write for other sites where your name and web link will appear
4. If you are a part of any professional organization, do they have a member's page?
5. If your company has multiple websites, do they link to each other?

D. What to have on your website?

1. The content you want to have for your web visitors
a. Press Releases
b. Newsletters
c. New employees
d. List of your products/services

2. The content your web visitors want you to have available
a. Evolution in websites - they are less egotistical now: it's more about the customer.
b. When they've seen your site, why should they return to it?
c. What new information should be posted?
d. Secure forms (credit card, financial or other private information) or contact forms
e. How to know what they want?
- List their call's questions on a pad
- Ask them: in person, take a survey ("How are we doing?"), etc.
- Check your website statistics
